An ex- Australian politician convicted of assaulting two individuals he met through work received a sentence to nearly six years in prison.

Legal Proceedings

The former official, forty-four, remained in jail since July after the court convicted him of attacking a victim and attacking another, in multiple events in over two years.

The politician served the coastal town of the district in the New South Wales parliament from the year 2011. He left his position as a Liberal Party official when allegations came to light in 2021 but resisted resigning from his seat and won again in 2023.

Sentencing Details

Judge the court official considered the defendant's condition of vision impairment in her sentence and found "no different consequence except for imprisonment could be considered".

The defendant, who participated via digital means at the courthouse, will serve at least nearly four years in custody before he can apply for parole.

The court official stated the court needs to "send a stern message to potential criminals that illegal behaviors such as this will be subject to serious punishments".

Case Background

The judge added Ward had "escaped justice for ten years and experienced freedom free from a programme or penalty for the offenses during that period".

After his conviction, the individual attempted a unsuccessful court challenge to stay in government and stepped down moments before the congress could expel him.

Representatives has stated earlier he aims to contest the guilty verdict.

Incident Details

The defendant's lengthy proceedings in the state court was told that he invited a drunk teenager to his home in the first incident and attacked him repeatedly, despite the victim's efforts to resist.

In 2015, he attacked a 24-year-old office worker at his property after a function at government offices.

He had argued the later assault didn't happen, and that the first victim was confused about their meeting from the first incident.

However, prosecutors argued that significant resemblances in the accounts of the victims, who had no connection to each other, showed they were being honest.

Court members debated for multiple days before delivering the findings of guilt.

The political exit caused a special election in his constituency in autumn, which was secured by the opposition party.
