Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included skipper Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn Tests, but Joe McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-man group, however Irish rugby authorities states new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as the coach opting against calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's three league matches so far and played in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
