Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Counters Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, indicated that the municipality was prepared for a face-off with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup tournament matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu appeared on a local podcast recently to respond to criticism from the White House, which had described her as "far-left." President Trump had warned that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who refuse to back down and comply or follow along to a divisive plan."

She further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting Boston's values." Wu finished by stressing her commitment for the city, saying, "Fully committed for our city."

Trump's Comments and FIFA Role

Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also been to the White House and presented World Cup and Club World Cup trophies to Trump as gifts.

Earlier, Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that included a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the president of the organization, who's great."

He continued, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Information

Trump has made previous comments that he would take the same conversation with Infantino about relocating games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is scheduled to be played from 11 June to 19 July in the coming year.
